Adjusting, trials and oncoming trains…

Posted by Louise on Jan 6, 2010 in Family Updates |

It’s been a difficult start to the new year, not surprising as it wasn’t a very happy end to the last. Joshie’s behaviour has been getting progressively more difficult the older and more responsive Lucas gets. It got to this point the other day…

This was during the emptying of his room… he lost all toys, everything except his books and was without them for 4 days… only today did something ‘twig’ and his behaviour has improved dramatically. The other day he drew me a picture which clearly showed me what was going on in that little head of his:

It’s a picture of our family… see Lucas? nope, neither do I. Joshie’s not yet gotten to grips with the fact that a) Lucas is here to stay and b) it doesn’t mean we love Joshie any less. After a meltdown at breakfast this morning (we’ve had nothing but endless whining, whinging, hitting, crying, screaming, throwing toys, no’s, general defiance and more) we had a talk, just me and him, without any distractions. I think it finally sunk in that HIS behaviour was the reason we’ve taken all his toys away, HIS behaviour was why he was having more time outs than time ins and HIS behaviour was why there were no treats, playgrounds or tv.

So today was a better day. Yay.

Still we did have moments over the last week that weren’t too bad… we took the boys to the zoo as we do every year, and Joshie loved the hippos… (so cute how he tried to say hippopotamus)…

We also decided to try and make some sort of holiday out of the crappy time we’ve had since before Christmas and headed up to Whangarei for the night. We managed to catch up with the lovely Janine (soooo cool to see ya chickie!!) and made a trip to the aquatic centre where Joshie went on the water slides for the first time.

I took Lukey for a swim in his ring (with a built in seat and headrest) and he was soooo relaxed in there. Just floating around. Smiling… so gorgeous. After all that over stimulation he crashed…

Back at the motel later he was wide awake and just gorgeous as always… man I love that little man so much it hurts. He’s just such a joy and really does fit his name (Lucas means bringer of light).

Ok… so what to do when I’m blue? shop… yes I admit it, shopping makes me happy. Not so much when I’m broke but we sold our old tv cabinet and had to get something to put our cd’s in. I lovvvveee this unit but Steve hates it… whatever, I’m sure it’ll migrate into any future scrap room I may get if we build in the future… can’t you just see it full of gorgeous little scrappy bits?

Oh well… off to my scrappy space to create once I’ve got junior off to bed… (wish me luck)…

Sounds like removing his toys was a good move, hopefully one that has caused a real change in his mindset and behaviour. I’ve heard this also works for ungrateful teenagers (removing everything from their rooms, even their beds!!) so it’s definitely a strategy worth considering as a parent! :-)
Glad you were able to have a little getaway to Whangarei. We love the aquatic centre up there, our boys can’t get enough of those slides! Lovely that you got to see Janine, too. I wanted to catch up with her when we were up there at Christmas but it was a whirlwind visit and we have so many family to fit in, LOL! :-)
Happy Scrapping tonight!

Love the pics! Here’s hoping Joshie improves for you, so know what you’re going through and it does get better. Ben got much better once Kate was walking and could understand basic instructions, he’s forever asking her to come into his room and they do play nicely now (although he does still take it too far but she can leave if she wants). Oh and the drawers are fab BTW!!
